Abstract
Background & Objectives : To observe the correlation between modified inflation deflation tympanometry test and the change of hearing after type I tympanoplasty.

Materials and Methods : This study included 197 patients (229 ears) applied type 1 tympanoplasty for non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media. Before surgery, the pressure-regulation functions of Eustachian tube were examined using the modified inflation deflation tympanometry test. Postoperative hearing was measured at 3 months and 6 months after the surgery.

Results: Modified inflation deflation tympanometry test did not show a significant correlation with the change of hearing after surgery. When middle ear showed a swollen mucosa and granulation intraoperatively, there was more frequent post-operative perforation or persistent otorrhea.

Conclusion: From this study, authors insisted that the result of modified inflation deflation tympanometry test was not always correlated with the hearing outcome after tympanoplasty. Not only the assessment of Eustachian tubal function but also mucosal condition of middle ear are important in the outcome of tympanoplasty.
